Australian PBS Review Threatens Access to MS Treatments: Ocrevus & Kesimpta at Risk (2026)

The Australian government's Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS) is under scrutiny for its potential impact on multiple sclerosis (MS) treatments. The PBS review could significantly alter the pricing of Ocrevus (ocrelizumab) and Kesimpta (ofatumumab), two essential disease-modifying therapies (DMTs) for MS patients. These medications are currently subsidised through the PBS, but their prices are set to be reviewed in July, with officials aiming for substantial reductions.

The PBS pricing system, which benchmarks drugs based on the lowest-priced similar medicines, could lead to a 40-50% reduction in the benchmark price for Ocrevus and Kesimpta. This reduction is partly due to the recent listing of Briumvi, a lower-cost MS treatment, which could trigger a chain reaction in pricing adjustments. The current PBS subsidy keeps these treatments affordable, with Ocrevus costing up to $33,000 annually without it.

MS patient and advocate Sharlene Brown, who has lived with MS for decades, expresses deep concern over the potential loss of access to these treatments. Brown, a senior counsel in Hobart, highlights the profound impact of MS on her life, forcing her to reevaluate her career and personal ambitions. She emphasizes the importance of these DMTs in maintaining her independence and ability to contribute to society.

Brown's experience is not unique. MS Australia, the advocacy group, supports the idea that a range of DMTs is crucial for tailored treatment. Acting Chief Executive Officer Dr. Julia Morahan stresses the need for continued access to high-efficacy medications on the PBS, ensuring that people with MS can receive the best possible care.

The PBS's lack of response to requests for comment adds to the uncertainty surrounding the review. The future of MS treatment in Australia hangs in the balance, with patients and advocates urging the government to consider the profound impact of these medications on their lives and the broader community.
