Pneumonia, an infection of the lungs, is a silent killer in hospitals, claiming thousands of lives annually. Yet, it often goes unnoticed and unreported. Our research aimed to shed light on this issue and explore potential preventive measures.
The focus of our trial was non-ventilator hospital-acquired pneumonia, which affects patients not on ventilators, typically outside intensive care. The cause? Bacteria from the mouth and throat breathed into the lungs. The consequences are dire, with patients facing extended hospital stays and a significantly higher risk of mortality.
Our study involved 8,870 patients across three Australian hospitals. The intervention? A simple yet impactful one: providing patients with toothbrushes and toothpaste upon admission, coupled with education for both patients and staff.
